My son is in a class once a week where he has many "out-of-the-box" learning opportunities (perfect for him). One of these opportunities is to occasionally do a marketplace where the students make and sell items. The guideline is that the students are expected to pay for materials to make their items.
We headed to Jo-Anns (NOT his favorite store, he reminds me often) to buy a few items. On the way through the checkout, he was enticed by some of the candy (Circus Peanuts -- remember eating those? Straight sugar, but you know I had to have one, just for the memory of my grandpa keeping those well-stocked in his top drawer).
Now that I have visions of Grandpa headed to his bedroom, and me feeling so anxious and excited about the treat he would bring back . . .
Back to Jo-Anns, the cashier gave us our total ($13 - and our Circus Peanuts were not 2 for a $1, they were the most expensive thing we bought!), and I looked at my son and told him he was going to have to pay for it. He looked back and me and said, "Mom, if you keep making me buy all this stuff, I am going to go bankrupt!"
I think he has been playing a bit too much Monopoly, but he is so cute and precise with his words.
