Meet the Mayor

Ever since school got out (a few weeks ago), my 7 yo has asked if he could meet the mayor of our city. My boy was "Assistant Mayor" in one of his classes at school. So, I thought, "What the heck -- it wouldn't hurt to shoot an email to the city government."  And, I did. A nice secretary responded and said we could come over.

Doesn't that just feel "small town" to you? Or, does it mostly just feel odd?

Well, I know small town and I don't live in a small town. The City Hall building is very fancy and the mayor's office is on the 4th floor. He doesn't have another job.

Here is my son sitting in the mayor's seat:
And, what do YOU want to be when you grow up?

I prepped my son just a little beforehand asking him to have a few questions in mind to ask the mayor. My little boy was charming and thoughtful. These were some of the questions he asked:
  1. Is it fun being Mayor?
  2. Do you have a family?
  3. What did you want to be when you grow up?
  4. What was your favorite subject in school?
Then, the mayor asked my son some of those same questions back. These were his answers:
  1. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, my boy answered, "A Mayor" or an astronaught, or a bone digger, or a teacher
  2. Favorite Subject:  I like math. I am good at math.
  3. When I was Mayor in my class, I got to dismiss the kids from their tables. I really liked that.
Since we've gotten home, he's told everyone about meeting the mayor. "The Mayor even met the President of the United States!" Then my boy asked if we might be able to meet the Mayor of Idaho (I am pretty sure he means the Mayor of Clifton). I will have to check his schedule ;-).

PS -- Just to bring our fame-seeking, "I-met-the-mayor" heads out of the clouds -- Child #2 had a literal heart attack just outside the building when one of her flip flops broke

  1. That's awesome! And unexpected. Even in our small town I'm not sure we'd be able to score any face-time with the actual mayor. Not that I know who it even is...maybe we've already met them and didn't know it! Yes, it is THAT small of a town. Or more likely--they're a patient of Jason's. :)
